Hey there,
You’ve nearly made it to the weekend!
Today, we’re serving up two very different slices of the news pie:
First up, it’s Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Then, we peek behind the curtain: The CIA has mysteriously “paused operations.” And it’s as strange as it sounds.
So grab your coffee (or crypto), and let’s dive in.
📌 Bitcoin Pizza Day hits $111K, and yes, a pizza is now worth over $1 billion
Fifteen years ago today, Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. That’s right! About $40 worth of food for what is now $1.1 billion.
Also, Bitcoin has just hit a fresh all-time high of $111,800 on this very anniversary.
What started as a quirky milestone on May 22, 2010, when BTC was just a nerdy internet experiment, has become crypto’s most iconic day. It wasn’t just about pizza; it was the first time Bitcoin was used in a real-world purchase, proving it could be more than just code.
Laszlo, by the way, doesn’t regret a thing. In a 2019 interview, he said it made Bitcoin feel “real,” which is exactly what it did for so many others, too.
Today, people aren’t just buying pizza with BTC. We’re talking homes, Lambos, and even (briefly) paying taxes. From a $40 order to a multi-trillion-dollar revolution, that’s insane!
So, happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
📌 Can an AI tool be held accountable for someone’s suicide?
A Florida judge just made a big call in a heartbreaking case that could change how AI companies are held accountable.
The lawsuit centers on a 14-year-old boy, Sewell Setzer III, who tragically died by suicide earlier this year. His mother claims that he became emotionally dependent on Character.AI, a chatbot platform backed by Google, after it allegedly subjected him to sexual and emotional abuse.
The defense tried to get the case thrown out, arguing that chatbot outputs are protected by free speech. But the judge wasn’t convinced, saying they failed to show how words generated by an AI model amount to constitutionally protected speech.
While one claim of intentional emotional distress was dropped, the court is allowing the rest of the case to move forward.
Importantly, this means Setzer’s mother can sue Character.AI and Google on product liability grounds, treating the chatbot like a faulty product rather than a service.
This is a big deal. It opens the door for tech companies to face legal consequences if their AI tools cause harm. The case is still unfolding, but for now, it’s a major step toward holding AI creators accountable.
📌CIA locks front gates of HQ after a man is shot
The CIA’s headquarters in Langley, Virginia, was forced to shut its gates after a woman was shot by security guards at the entrance.
According to initial reports, she drove up to the gate and refused to stop, prompting guards to open fire.
The woman, who hasn’t been named yet, was shot in the upper body and rushed to the hospital with non-fatal injuries.
Employees were quickly alerted and told to avoid the main gate, using alternate routes instead. The incident has put one of the world’s most secure locations, home to over 20,000 U.S. intelligence officials, under intense scrutiny.
What makes this even more alarming? The shooting came just hours after a deadly attack outside a Jewish museum in Washington D.C., where two Israeli embassy workers were killed.
Authorities say the suspect there shouted, “Free, free Palestine” as he was arrested.
Whether the two incidents are connected remains to be seen, but it's been a tense 24 hours for U.S. security forces.
