Hey everyone! Welcome back to TodaysWorld. It’s Thursday, the weekend is almost here, but we’ve still got plenty of stories to keep you going. Let’s dive in!
But before we do, here’s your Thursday task:
📌 Send an encouraging message to someone who might need a little boost today
Lifting someone’s spirits can have a positive impact on your own emotions. Helping others releases endorphins, often referred to as the "helper’s high," which can make you feel happier and more fulfilled.
Moreover, reaching out to someone who needs encouragement fosters a sense of empathy and compassion, helping you see the world from their perspective. This improves your emotional intelligence and makes you more mindful of others’ feelings.
Now, let’s get into today’s stories…
Oysters Are Vegetables
There’s an ongoing debate in the vegan community about whether it's ethical to eat oysters. Traditional veganism excludes all animal products, with the Vegan Society defining it as avoiding anything derived wholly or partially from animals. This definition includes invertebrates like oysters and mussels.
However, a newer perspective called "bivalve veganism" suggests that consuming molluscs like oysters may still align with vegan ethics.
The argument in favor of bivalve veganism centers around the fact that oysters and mussels lack a central nervous system or brain, meaning they cannot feel pain in the same way higher-order animals do. Pain, as understood by scientists, involves a nociceptive response where the nervous system reacts to harmful stimuli. While some animals process sensory pain that leads to suffering, oysters do not have the neurological structures required for this, which means their consumption does not cause them distress.
Despite this, there is still much to be researched. While oysters show no signs of experiencing pain, some scientists argue that we don’t fully understand the extent of their nervous capabilities. Until more is known, the question remains open, but for many, the idea of bivalve veganism provides a middle ground between strict veganism and ethical concerns around animal welfare. (More)
Goldman Sachs Is Making Millions By Selling Pringles
Goldman Sachs is set to pocket a hefty $92 million in advisory fees for its role in one of the biggest deals of the year. They advised Kellanova, the company behind well-known brands like Pringles and Pop Tarts, on its massive $36 billion sale to Mars. On top of that, Lazard, which advised Kellanova's board, will earn $10 million for their part. However, these earnings are contingent on the deal closing successfully, so there’s still a bit of suspense in the air.
Why does Goldman’s $92 million fee matter so much? Well, not only is this deal huge—Mars’ acquisition of Kellanova is the largest U.S. merger announced this year.
To put it in perspective, Goldman Sachs earned $46 million in fees last year for advising on a $65 billion deal involving Pioneer Resources. In comparison, this $92 million fee highlights just how significant and lucrative this transaction is for the bank.
Fees like these are typically calculated as a percentage of the deal’s value in mergers and acquisitions, and large deals like this one tend to bring in substantial sums. Plus, long-term advisors such as Goldman earn these sell-side fees because they effectively lose their clients after the deal closes.
BTW, More Than 400 Children Were Getting Abused
Malaysian police rescued 402 children and teenagers aged 1 to 17 from 20 care homes where they were allegedly physically and sexually abused. Some children were forced to perform sexual acts on each other. Police arrested 171 suspects, including religious teachers and caretakers, linked to these homes, which are reportedly connected to a prominent Islamic conglomerate, GISB. The conglomerate denied any wrongdoing. Investigations revealed that the care homes were set up to collect donations. Authorities are calling for stricter regulations, as the homes were poorly monitored. The rescued children are receiving medical care. (More)
Mrs. Switzerland Was Blended Into A Puree
Kristina Joksimovic, a 38-year-old former Miss Switzerland finalist, met a truly tragic end when her husband, Thomas, brutally murdered and dismembered her in their home in Binningen, near Basel, Switzerland. The horrifying crime was discovered on February 13, when authorities found her remains. Thomas, 41, initially told police a chilling story: he claimed to have found Kristina dead and, in a state of panic, dismembered her body. But later, in March, he confessed to killing her, although he tried to justify it as self-defense, saying she had attacked him with a knife.
But that story didn’t hold up. Medical experts found no evidence to support his claim of self-defense. Instead, they determined Kristina had been strangled to death. And what came next was even more disturbing—Thomas didn’t stop at killing her. He used a jigsaw, knife, and garden shears to dismember her body, and then went as far as “pureeing” some of her remains with a hand blender before dissolving them in a chemical solution. It's the kind of crime that shocks you to your core.
Prosecutors painted a picture of a man with no remorse, saying he showed "a noticeably high level of criminal energy, lack of empathy, and cold-bloodedness." What’s more chilling is that this wasn’t an isolated incident of violence. Thomas had reportedly choked Kristina before, and even a former partner had accused him of slamming her head into a wall.
Kristina wasn’t just a beauty queen—she was a successful entrepreneur. After her pageant days, she ran her own business, coaching catwalk models. She even mentored Dominique Rinderknecht, Switzerland's representative for Miss Universe in 2013. Her death has left so many people in shock.
