Why has Los Angeles declared an emergency?
A brand of raw pet food recently tested positive for bird flu, and it’s sparked some serious concerns. Just days ago, the county also reported its first human case of bird flu - right after a statewide emergency was declared.
Northwest Naturals Feline Turkey Recipe Raw & Frozen Pet Food has been recalled after a house cat in Oregon tragically passed away from eating it. Officials are urging everyone to steer clear of raw meat, dairy, or poultry for both you and your furry friends - these products can carry all sorts of germs, including bird flu.
California is already grappling with the outbreak, with 36 of the nation’s 65 human cases. The state declared an emergency after bird flu was found in Southern California dairy cows. Symptoms to watch for in humans include fever, cough, and even eye irritation. Scary, but the risk to the general public is still low.
If you’re working with animals - whether it’s livestock, poultry, or wildlife - extra caution is key. Avoid handling sick or dead animals without protection, and make sure your pets stay safe from exposure, too. Oh, and skipping raw or undercooked animal products? Definitely a smart move.

Disaster on Christmas
A tragic plane crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, has left the world stunned. Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243, carrying 67 people, burst into flames during an emergency landing after what’s suspected to be a bird strike. Thankfully, at least 32 people have survived, including two children, but rescue workers are still searching for others.
Survivors emerged from the wreckage dazed and bloodied, their cries for help heartbreaking. One woman who rushed to the scene described rescuing passengers, including a little girl begging to save her mother.
Also, San Francisco is getting sued
Lyft is suing San Francisco, claiming the city overcharged it by $100 million in taxes over the last five years. The issue is that the city calculated Lyft’s taxes based on the total fares passengers paid, but Lyft argues that taxes should be based on the fees drivers pay to the company instead. Lyft treats drivers as customers who use their service, not employees. They say the city's tax formula doesn’t accurately reflect their business model and overstates their gross receipts. Lyft is asking for a refund of the overpaid taxes.
