The Ceasefire
A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has come into effect in Lebanon, marking the potential end of over a year of conflict. The agreement, announced Tuesday, stipulates that Israeli forces will withdraw from Lebanon within 60 days, while Hezbollah will be replaced by Lebanese army forces in southern Lebanon during the same period.
The conflict had intensified in September, with increased Israeli bombardments and a ground invasion.
A Trump campaign official attributed the peace deal to President-elect Donald Trump's recent election victory, suggesting it motivated regional actors to seek peace. The official reiterated Trump's unwavering support for Israel and commitment to Middle East peace while emphasizing that "Iran-backed proxies" are preparing for Trump's return to power in January alongside a "strong national security team."
Why Did Netanyahu Agree To The Deal?
The Israeli prime minister supports a ceasefire with Hezbollah for three main reasons:
Acknowledging the threat: Israel has significantly weakened Iran’s air defense and nuclear capabilities, shifting the military balance in its favor. With much of Hezbollah’s missile arsenal destroyed, the threat from Iran is reduced.
Military Exhaustion: The Israeli military requires time to rearm and recover, as it is not prepared for prolonged conflicts on two fronts. Ending the conflict in Lebanon allows forces to concentrate on Gaza.
Isolating Hamas: Removing Hezbollah from the conflict increases pressure on Hamas, disrupting its reliance on being part of Iran's "Axis of Resistance." However, this strategy faces criticism from hostage families who accuse Netanyahu of prioritizing prolonged conflict over securing a deal for their release.
Why Are Israelis Angry About The Ceasefire?
Many Israelis are angry about the ceasefire with Hezbollah, seeing it as a sign of weakness. Critics, including Netanyahu's political rivals and some allies, accuse him of surrendering despite his claims of Israel's "unprecedented achievements." A recent poll showed over 80% of Netanyahu’s support base opposed the deal, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction.
Residents in northern Israel, many of whom were evacuated, express fear and distrust. Some, like Rona Valency, support the ceasefire but worry about Hezbollah infiltrating border villages. Others, like her husband, only trust Israel's military to ensure security, doubting the Lebanese army or international mediators.
While Netanyahu justifies the ceasefire as necessary to focus on Iran and maintain military freedom, many Israelis question why he seeks peace in the north while continuing to pursue "total victory" in Gaza. The divide highlights frustration over displaced residents, economic strain, and the perception of an incomplete mission.
