Good morning and welcome to your Wednesday edition, where we remind you that it’s totally okay to be halfway through the week and still not know what day it is.
Whether you’re sipping your third coffee or contemplating the meaning of your inbox, we’ve got a story that’s wilder than your group chat on a Friday night.
📌 Woman poses as fake ICE agent to kidnap ex’s wife
A Florida woman, Latrance Battle, 52, is facing multiple serious charges after allegedly impersonating a federal immigration officer to kidnap her ex-boyfriend’s wife.
Yes, you read that right.
The saga unfolded on April 10, when Battle reportedly showed up at the workplace of Merika Senior, a hotel employee and legal U.S. resident-in-process, and claimed she was from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to authorities, Battle unzipped her jacket to reveal a black shirt with "ICE" emblazoned across the front and even flashed a phony business card, appearing to link her to the sheriff’s office.
Merika, clearly rattled and uncertain, called her boss before willingly going with Battle, believing she was in the custody of a federal agent. While in the car, Battle reinforced the illusion by using a handheld radio, further convincing Merika that the arrest was real.
But when they arrived not at the sheriff’s office, but at an apartment complex, Merika knew something was off. The situation escalated when Battle allegedly snatched her phone, preventing her from calling her lawyer or husband.
Inside the apartment, Battle allegedly became aggressive, declaring Merika had to “suffer the consequences of her husband’s actions.” That’s when Merika, seizing a moment of chaos, fled to a neighbor’s apartment and called for help.
And here’s where it gets even messier.
Merika’s husband, Marlon Tharpe, upon hearing the situation, immediately suspected Battle, his ex-girlfriend who had previously attacked him two years ago.
A restraining order had been filed after that encounter, yet she returned, now armed with a fake identity and what appears to be a long-harbored vendetta.
Police later arrested Battle on April 11 as she was reportedly headed to Alabama, perhaps in an attempt to flee. Body cam footage shows officers having to coax her from her vehicle. She’s now facing a laundry list of charges:
Falsely impersonating an officer during the commission of a felony
Kidnapping with intent to facilitate a felony
Robbery by sudden snatching
As if that weren’t enough, Battle was already on felony probation for aggravated assault at the time of the alleged abduction.
She appeared in court on April 12 and is scheduled to return on May 29. She remains in custody on a $25,000 bond.
📌 Then, this man offers a vodka Spritz mid-chase
A Florida man named Richard Christopher Smith allegedly stole booze and other items from a convenience store, then fled when deputies showed up. But the real twist?
In the middle of the police chase, Smith held a can of vodka spritz out the window and offered it to a deputy, saying, “I was just going to give you a drink, that’s it.”
Naturally, the officers didn’t “cheers” back.
The chase ended near the Sebring Regional Airport, where Smith’s car tires were taken out by spike strips. Still, he tried to ram two police vehicles, then nonchalantly lit a cigarette and strolled away as if he’d just wrapped up a picnic.
When asked if they had fun, officers responded by tasing him mid-smoke.
Smith now faces a long list of charges, including DUI, aggravated assault on officers, and theft.
