Hey everyone, let’s begin the week with purpose.
Here’s a task to sharpen your focus:
📌 Write down one major challenge you want to overcome this week and three steps to tackle it
In today’s edition, I’ll be sharing serious updates and key insights to empower your decisions this week. Let’s make it count.
🎯 Details of the tragedy
At least 124 people were killed when a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash-landed without landing gear at South Korea's Muan International Airport, erupting into flames upon impact with a wall. The flight, carrying 181 passengers from Bangkok, marked South Korea’s deadliest airline accident in nearly 30 years. Rescue efforts were hampered by the devastation, with only two crew members rescued alive from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations suggest a bird strike may have caused the landing gear malfunction, with the pilots issuing a mayday call shortly before the crash. Most passengers are presumed dead, and recovery operations are ongoing. Jeju Air’s CEO apologized, emphasizing support for the bereaved as a priority. South Korea’s acting president has pledged full government support for the response.
The crash has led to the suspension of all flights at Muan Airport, as authorities and investigators work to uncover the cause of the tragic accident.
🎯 North Korean soldiers are killing themselves
The US claims North Korean troops in Ukraine are being subjected to "hopeless assaults" and treated as disposable by Russia. Reports suggest some soldiers take their own lives to avoid capture, fearing retribution against their families back in North Korea. Over 1,000 North Korean soldiers have reportedly died within a week, with significant losses in Kursk. Both Russia and North Korea have remained silent on the alleged deployment.
🎯 Americans in these areas have been hacked again
A ninth U.S. telecom company has been identified as a victim of the Chinese hacking campaign known as Salt Typhoon, which targeted private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, particularly in the Washington-Virginia area. The hackers aimed to identify phone owners, particularly those involved in government and political activities, to spy on their communications. Senior U.S. officials and prominent political figures are believed to be among the targets.
🎯 NASA has now reached the Sun!
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has made history by surviving the closest-ever approach to the Sun, passing just 3.8 million miles (6.1 million km) from its surface. On Christmas Eve, the spacecraft plunged into the Sun’s outer atmosphere, enduring extreme temperatures of 1,800°F (980°C) and intense radiation.
Traveling at a record-breaking speed of 430,000 mph (692,000 kph), it gathered data to help scientists unravel solar mysteries like the corona’s extreme heat and the origin of the solar wind.
NASA scientists anxiously awaited confirmation of the probe’s safety after its flyby, finally receiving a signal on December 28. Protected by a carbon-composite shield, Parker Solar Probe continues its mission to enhance our understanding of the Sun’s activity, which impacts Earth’s power grids, electronics, and communication systems. This daring mission promises to shed light on the mechanisms driving solar phenomena and space weather.
🎯 Oh, finally some good news
Japan’s unique approach of installing calming blue lights at train stations has resulted in an 83% drop in suicides. First introduced in the late 2000s, the blue lighting is believed to reduce anxiety and promote emotional stability, particularly in high-risk areas such as train platforms. This initiative’s remarkable success has captured global attention, highlighting how subtle environmental adjustments can significantly improve mental health and enhance public safety.
